Director of Student Disability Services (#449)

Summary of Duties

 

The Director of Student Disability Services (SDS) is responsible for the oversight and coordination of academic accommodation plans for students with documented disabilities.  The Director will also coordinate the Student Testing Center, including schedules and proctors for qualifying students.   S/he will also be responsible for staffing, evaluation, budget, policy and program development and implementation, and adherence to legal, professional, and ethical standards. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with students to determine eligibility and design and implementation of individualized academic accommodation plans based on student needs and in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Serves as consultant to other student services areas on campus regarding disability accommodations including Housing and Residence Life, Dining Services, Health Services, and Counseling and Student Development Center. The Director also works with these and other areas regarding the determination of reasonable accommodations for students with temporary impairments.
  • Supervises one part-time administrative support person, work study students, note takers, and graduate assistant (when available).
  • Manages departmental budget and effectively plans and communicates any new necessary expenses to the Assistant Vice President for Student Success in timely manner.
  • Develops and revises any policies and procedures to guide the provision of reasonable accommodations to students with documented disabilities.
  • Works with faculty members to ensure compliance of ADA, Section 504 and FERPA while maintaining the academic integrity of courses and requirements.
  • Assists students with self-advocacy including encouraging them to work with faculty members in the implementation of approved academic accommodation plans and procedures.
  • Closely collaborates with other members of the Student Success team and other student support offices at the University.
  • Serves on the Behavioral Intervention Team and other relevant committees to represent the needs of the students and department.

Requirements

  • Educational:

    Qualifications:

    Required - Master’s, Specialist, or Doctoral degree in psychology, school psychology, counseling, social work, special education or related area.  Demonstrated knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

    Preferred- One to three years of experience working in the higher education environment; experience working with students with disabilities in this environment.
